1. Increase wear resistance. One of the most striking properties of improving molecular weight polyethylene is its extremely high wear resistance, which is very valuable in many engineering applications. At present, the abrasion resistance of all plastics is good, even many metal materials (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.) are not as good as it. As the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, this material will be more wear-resistant.

 

2. Extremely high impact resistance. The impact strength of UHMWPE is related to its molecular weight. When the molecular weight is less than 2 million, the impact strength increases with the increase of molecular weight, reaching a peak at about 2 million. After the peak, the impact strength will decline if the molecular weight increases again. This is due to the fact that the molecular chain temporarily hinders its photo crystallization, so that there is a large amorphous region in the macromolecule, which can absorb large impact energy.

 

3. Very low coefficient of friction. UHMWPE is very wear-resistant, with low friction coefficient and good self-lubricating property. It is an ideal bearing sleeve, sliding block and lining material.

 

Using UHMWPE as the friction part of the equipment can not only improve the wear life, but also achieve energy saving effect.

 

4. Good chemical corrosion resistance. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene has good chemical corrosion resistance. Except for concentrated and concentrated sulfuric acid, it will not be corroded in all alkaline and acid solutions, and can be used at temperature (80oC concentrated hydrochloric acid is also stable in<20% and<75% sulfuric acid, and it is also stable for water and liquid washing.)

 

However, UHMWPE is very easy to swell in aromatics or halogenated compounds (especially at high temperatures), so special attention should be paid to its application.

 

5. Very low water absorption. Ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) has very low water absorption. It almost does not absorb water and does not expand in water. It is much less absorbent than nylon.

6. Thermal performance. According to the ASTM (load 4.6kg/cm2) method, the thermal deformation temperature is 85oC. Under a small load, the service temperature can reach 90oC. Under special circumstances, it is allowed to use at a higher temperature. Since UHMWPE is a material with excellent toughness, its low temperature resistance is also very excellent. It still has certain ductility at - 269oC, There is no evidence of embrittlement.

 

7. Electrical performance. UHMWPE has excellent electrical properties in a wide temperature range. Its volume resistance is 10-18CM, breakdown voltage is 50KV/mm, and dielectric constant is 2.3. In a wide range of temperature and frequency, its electrical performance changes very little. In the range of heat-resistant temperature, it is suitable for use as structural material of electrical engineering and material of paper mill.

 

8. Non toxic UHMWPE is tasteless, non-toxic, odorless, non corrosive, and has physiological circulation and physiological adaptability. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) allow it to be used in contact with food and drugs.

 

These characteristics, especially wear resistance, impact resistance and self-lubricating properties, are found in engineering plastics.
